With a distinct European flair and styling, a stunning reproduction of one of the most popular chess sets used in the major international Chess tournaments during the 1950s and 1960s, including the legendary 1959 World Champion Qualifier in Zagreb, Yugoslavia.

Deluxe Chess Sets is proud to offer the Zagreb '59 Series Chess set. A full tournament-sized Chess set, it features a 3.875" King with a 1.75"diameter base. The Chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and crafted out of the highest grade woods. The Chess pieces are heavily weighted with luxurious billiard cloth base pads and a beautiful finish. The design of the Zagreb '59 Chess set is an adaptation of the most popular Chess set used at major international Chess tournaments throughout the 1950s and 1960s, most notably the World Championship Candidates Match that was held in Bied, Zagreb in 1959. Several minor improvements to the design of the Chess set, including the ability to replace the ball finial (cross) atop the King with the more recognizable Formeé cross to conform to modern Western tournament praxis. The Chess set comes with both styles of King finials (crosses) that are easily removable, allowing its owner to option to change between both styles. The Chess set has been designed to withstand years of use (and abuse), as it lacks many of the ornate details commonly found on Chess Sets that can be susceptible to damage in the heat of battle. For example, the Chess set features reinforced Pawn collars, stylized Knights and minimal Queen crenellations for unmatched durability. The Zagreb '59 Series Chess set is ideal for those that are interested in both the historical importance of the game of Chess, as well as those looking for an attractive Chess set that is both economical and durable.

As with all of our Chess sets, the Zagreb '59 Series Chessmen exemplifies a perfect combination of distinct beauty and functionality. It has been designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining an elegance. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is unmatched by any set of Chessmen in its price range. The Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, including four Queens.

Note: The Boxwood Chessmen are shown in image above. The Chessboard/s shown in this listing are for photographic purposes only and are not included with the purchase of these Chessmen.

CHESSMEN:
Man Ray designed this chess set in 1920 using found objects from his studio. Most of the pieces are geometric models made for still-life drawing (the king is a pyramid, the queen a cone, the rook a cube, the pawn a sphere).

The knight—the finial of a violin—was fashioned from a box of abandoned violin necks. Only a handful were ever produced (the maharajah of Indore commissioned a set made from silver-plated brass).

As well as constructing his set from practical items, Man Ray's design (just like his artwork) utilizes symbolic design. The King (3.25") represents the Egyptian king's pyramid; the Queen is the conical headdress of a medieval queen; the Bishop represents a flask for concocting healing liqueurs. The Pawn is nearly as tall as the Rook, perhaps symbolizing the hidden importance of the Pawn in the game.

This re-edition is rendered in Beech wood, as Man Ray originally intended, and is based on a set housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. To play with this set is to create a slow moving, sculptural tableau. You'll want to take your time pondering your next move.

CHESSBOARD:
Designed for use with the Man Ray Chess Set, the IC Design Group Man Ray Chess Board is made of solid beech wood to celebrate Man Ray's original 1920 design. The contrasting finishes perfectly complement the Man Ray Chess Set for a visually pleasing game.

These chess pieces are scaled replicas of the originals which were discovered on the Isle of Lewis off the West Coast of Scotland and which are now housed safely and securely in the British Museum of London and in Edinburgh. Many pieces were discovered and this is our interpretation of the Isle of Lewis chess set. The Isle of Lewis chessmen were featured in the movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

In 1831 the sea carried away a sandbank on the Isle of Lewis uncovering a mysterious building that had been buried under the sand. A peasant working nearby found what he concluded to be a collection of Elves and Gnomes. The superstitious highlander flung down his spade and fled home in horror. Superstition in Lewis had survived in a powerful form. Thus, when the peasant first looked at the group of singular little ivory figures it was natural that they should appear as the pigmy sprites of Celtic folklore. However, he was induced by his wife to return to the spot and take the figures home. He sold them to a local collector who realized they were chessmen. There were 78 pieces in all belonging to eight or more sets; 67 are now in the British Museum and the rest in the National Museum, Edinburgh. Experts are unanimous in regarding them as the most astonishing collection of ancient chessmen in existence.

ALL STUDIO ANNE CARLTON CHESSMEN ARE MADE FROM POLYRESIN, WHICH IS A CRUSHED STONE COMPOSITE. IT HAS THE LOOK, FEEL AND WEIGHT OF STONE, BUT THE DURABILITY OF A PLASTIC, MAKING IT THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.
